Hope everyone had a good weekend. I took my own advise and after an outing all day sat with the family I took them all out to Seasons 52 for dinner. This morning we wake up to yet another strong pre market open for individual stocks. FSLR up 3.6% FB 1% aapl .8%. Lets see how we progress during the day and close. Many feel the market is a bit frothy up here and some have even said it feels a bit 1999 like. “This has been a terrible year for hedge funds and active managers. The market blasted higher, starting on the first day of the year and the lack of correction has made it nearly impossible to catch up once you were behind. With the year quickly winding down, there is even more concern about trying to tack on some relative performance.” So a pullback will be seen as just

eryba1

October 21, 2013 – 8:39 am

another opportunity to buy the dips. “We had more than 1200 new highs on Friday, and if you aren’t willing to pay up for stocks that are already extended you simply are not going to be able to put much money to work. But it is very important to keep in mind that when a market is running this hot it doesn’t suddenly reverse and go straight down unless there is some huge unexpected, negative news. Technically, this sort of action creates very strong underlying support. Many buyers may not be willing to chase, but they sure would be happy to buy if we have a dip.”

eryba1

October 21, 2013 – 9:33 am

thinking of trimming more FSLR as up another 6% today

eryba1

October 21, 2013 – 9:38 am

and adding a tranche of QQQ short common shares today as well

Johan

musa

October 21, 2013 – 10:22 am

so scared to take profits in the AAPL calls i bought a week ago. i hate when i take profits and the stock goes up further in my face

Cody

October 21, 2013 – 10:23 am

@musa: Do partial trim!

eryba1

October 21, 2013 – 10:23 am

@musa: sell in tranches, trim on selling and tranches when buying! NEVER be scared to take profits this way

musa

October 21, 2013 – 10:24 am

thanks @Cody: and @eryba1: but im too greedy for that… i usually buy a bunch then sell at once. usually works out for me

October 21, 2013 – 10:33 am

@musa: If U R being serious what we u learning from this site??

eryba1

October 21, 2013 – 10:34 am

Trim when things are wildly positive day after day and add in steps on pullbacks when things get oversold and extreme sentiment

eryba1

October 21, 2013 – 10:36 am

@musa: use these tools to help u http://money.cnn.com/data/fear-and-greed/?iid=H_INV_QL http://tickersense.typepad.com/ticker_sense/2013/10/ http://www.mcoscillator.com/market_breadth_data/ VIX index, individual stocks RSI chart and soon your own gut will develop getting a sense of where things are, plus reading this site and others what investors / traders far smarter than I are saying daily

musa

October 21, 2013 – 10:37 am

im not going to debate my trading style but tranches just dont work for me. i come for cody’s insights on the market as hes usually right. every1 trades differently

Cody

October 21, 2013 – 10:38 am

@musa: Amen!

eryba1

October 21, 2013 – 10:39 am

@musa: correct and he just posted a few moments ago to trim in stages on the way up. My point was to read, see conditions and then formulate your own independent idea after taking all those points into consideration

calmdaw1

October 21, 2013 – 10:39 am

If everyone traded the same, there would be no trading at all.

eryba1

October 21, 2013 – 10:40 am

@calmdaw1: 100% right, but when someone says ” yea ill probably get burned by the end of the day thats how it always is…”

jahmon

October 21, 2013 – 10:46 am

How about adding Z to our list of bubble stocks to consider shorting?

calmdaw1

October 21, 2013 – 10:46 am

@eryba1: yes and in the post before he said his style usually works out for him. It can’t both work and always get burned…

eryba1

October 21, 2013 – 10:48 am

@calmdaw1: I know Im just going by what he said. Either way the tools are listed. Its up to each of us to do what has led to the best results on an subjective basis as each portfolio and person is different.

jpsr1975

October 21, 2013 – 11:09 am

Guys what do u think about CHKP?

eryba1

October 21, 2013 – 11:23 am

@jpsr1975: chart looks healthy may be breaking out as bouncing off 50 day moving avg to new hi’s

msamuels2000

October 21, 2013 – 11:24 am

@Cody: any tasty earnings gambles this quarter?

satishask

October 21, 2013 – 11:29 am

NFLX reporting today. Anybody any earnings gamblings?

satishask

October 21, 2013 – 11:29 am

How about earnings gambling for VMW.

eryba1

October 21, 2013 – 11:33 am

@satishask: With the run up of MANY stocks into earnings we could get a sell the news affect. GOOG a prime example was the opposite it was down trending at for some time and saw 855 and surprised ALL. Now FB FSLR AMZN are ramping into their earnings. On a smaller level for action go RT ahead. Just basing my own portfolios and they have been ON FIRE, Id rather sell and lock in gains and look for pullbacks to add into.

eryba1

October 21, 2013 – 11:43 am

On Friday, Facebook and Google announced a new partnership whereby Google’s DoubleClick Bid Manager business will be added as a bidding partner on Facebook’s ad exchange. This is a positive development, as it generally gives Facebook’s exchange more credibility, more ad diversification and likely better pricing. Google’s DoubleClick is the largest demand-side platform, with 25%-30% market share, and it is used by several of the largest ad agencies in the world. The absence of DoubleClick on Facebook’s exchange has been noted by several agencies, and its inclusion should be viewed positively by them for better engagement. By adding more bidders to the exchange, this partnership should improve the price (CPMs) and should likely improve the quality and diversity of ads and advertisers.

Cody

October 21, 2013 – 11:43 am

@jahmon: It’s on the list to consider shorting already! $Z’s another bubblicious App Bubble Stock. Timing is the question.

hc2002

October 21, 2013 – 12:10 pm

@Cody, I hear almost no negativity about Google, I’m flipping it anyway since it’s a bit oversized in my portfolio.

jahmon

October 21, 2013 – 12:12 pm

@cool Thanks. Looks like it’s come down some as opposed to PCLN, NFLX, YELP, P

echan008

October 21, 2013 – 12:15 pm

@Cody: XONE down almost 4% today. Should we add more?

Cody

October 21, 2013 – 12:16 pm

@echan008: It’s up in a straight line from the low $40s where I added to it in a tranche. Not in the mood to chase stuff up here, would rather trim.

echan008

October 21, 2013 – 12:17 pm

@Cody: Thanks

jpsr1975

October 21, 2013 – 12:35 pm

@Cody: are u adding more puts to the PCLN position?

satishask

October 21, 2013 – 1:15 pm

@eryba1: thanks.

ebdavids

October 21, 2013 – 2:03 pm

@Cody: if you’re still there — how’s this for an idea? When you share your “more than a feeling” and say you’ll be trimming your high-fliers a bit . . . is it a reasonable party for those who DON’T hold those stocks to tranche-in to the same degree with a short? Seems there’s a certain logic there, no? In other words, you hold FSLR and for good contrarian reason and you cut back 10% . . . I don’t hold FSLR but for the same contrarian reasons I short 10% of what ultimately plan to hold. Make sense?

jahmon

October 21, 2013 – 2:12 pm

VJET up 25% today

nrmeshram

October 21, 2013 – 2:17 pm

VMW, NFLX report earnings today ? any ideas on how to play these @eryba1 ?

eryba1

October 21, 2013 – 2:21 pm

@nrmeshram: nflx past week or so from 286 to 347 today. they will need HUGE #’s today to keep momentum going. lets see #’s and market reaction. A good report could also have a sell the news reaction as alot priced in and people take some off. This market / individual stocks have been RED HOT just 2 weeks ago the S&P was at 1650 from 1725 hi, and today hit 1747. its been in a channel 1650 bottom and 1750 top. This is the 2nd time it tagged the top. lets see if we get a pullback back to 1650 as the market is certainly giddy on many fronts.

calmdaw1

October 21, 2013 – 2:53 pm

wanted to get some NFLX puts but the premiums are ridiculous at this point

Cody

October 21, 2013 – 3:07 pm

This market is bubblicious. Crazy. I’d rather be short $NFLX into the call than long it, though. Put premiums are ridiculous, but if you buy out several months away, you get some time premium that won’t disappear unless the stock just absolutely pops to like $400 tomorrow or something. Which in a bubblicious market, could happen. Careful out there on both sides at this point, as the risk/reward isn’t as easy and favorable as it was a few months or a couple years ago.

nramanuja

October 21, 2013 – 3:11 pm

@Cody: Hi Cody, Just joined this group last week, live in Rio Rancho, New Mexico. Wanted to say hi and looking forward to this. Thank you! Narahari

ebdavids

October 21, 2013 – 3:11 pm

@Cody: whaddya think of my mirror-Cody-image strategy re reverse tranching (see me about four blurbs above)? Does your tranche-to-preserve gains not work in reversewhen it comes to committing new $ in this bubblicious market?

Cody

October 21, 2013 – 3:11 pm

@nramanuja: Welcome and thanks for joining! Rio Rancho’s a neat place.

calmdaw1

October 21, 2013 – 3:12 pm

NFLX weekly 285 puts are going for $2 and change whereas last Thursday I was able to get GOOG 940 calls for that price. I only needed a 6% move in GOOG whereas in NFLX it would take an almost 20% move. Needless to say the Goog’s paid off very well but I don’t see the same risk/reward in NFLX

Cody

October 21, 2013 – 3:12 pm

@ebdavids: I don’t follow, but if you’ll try one more time and elaborate a little more maybe I can help. Sorry.

Cody

October 21, 2013 – 3:13 pm

@calmdaw1: That’s GREAT insight!

calmdaw1

October 21, 2013 – 3:15 pm

@Cody: thanks. I closed the GOOG’s early Friday when the stock was 990.

ebdavids

October 21, 2013 – 3:17 pm

Jeez. Why does everybody say that to me? Did you see my longer blurb at 2:03 pm, above? I’m saying if YOU say it’s worth it to tranche 5-10% out of a high-flyer (as you did in your alert), does it make similar sense for someone who isn’t holding that high-flyer to trance IN to it? Say, if you cut back 5% on what you have in FSLR, does it make sense for me 9who doesn’t hold FSLR yet) to short FSLR to the tune of 5% of what I’d ultimately want to short it? Or — as i suggest — does your eminent logic for trimming 5% of a high-flyer not apply in this market to someone who is investing new money (in the form of a short) in the same stock? Capiche? (Let me know if it’s a dumb idea to mirror you in the reverse direction.)

ebdavids

October 21, 2013 – 3:23 pm

And now you’re gone. Oh well — hoped for an answer today, but if you don’t, will catch you in the Weekly Q&A

eryba1

October 21, 2013 – 3:26 pm

NFLX ramping now 6.25% higher into earnings! I would for FUn go short the stock into earnings if I had to choose go long or short at this point.

eryba1

October 21, 2013 – 3:52 pm

on very light volume the gold miners etf= the GDX is rallying 2% while GLD etf is unch. the usually trade in the same direction. Silver ETF is also up 1.5$

eryba1

October 21, 2013 – 3:56 pm

Cramer”tomorrow we get Friday’s postponed employment number at 8:30 a.m. and we need to recognize that we will be right back on Washington’s red-hot griddle because that’s just the way it works these days. You have to figure that no matter what the number, you are being given a reason to sell. If it is too strong, we will hear that the Fed is nervous about the strength of the economy. We will hear Fed governors interviewed who will fret about how it is time to scale back bond-buying. If it is too weak, we are going to hear that the tussle over the shutdown and the debt ceiling killed the U.S. economy and it can’t be revived by the Fed’s failed efforts.”

eryba1

October 21, 2013 – 4:01 pm

is that why the gdx is up? tiny volume though?. Well SEE NFLX is OUT and initial reaction is GOOG like up 10% or so A/H now at 387+

ebdavids

October 21, 2013 – 4:05 pm

@eryba1: I didn’t get around to doing it today, but are you still OK with shorting QQQ? I’m already short SPY (down about 7%, but hopeful) . . . make sense to add QQQ to that short list as well, you think? Or is it too much of a “short gamble”?

jpsr1975

October 21, 2013 – 4:09 pm

It feels like market will never come down….as on the late 90’s

eryba1

October 21, 2013 – 4:12 pm

@ebdavids: All depends how much of your portfolio is long, short and cash? My QQQ I just began shorting it with an 82 handle. The market just need to work off overbought nature. How it does that is why I am here to see and take action if needed. Vix was near 21 I think then collapsed to 13, too many bulls, Cnn poll/ meter shows too much giddiness so I will watch and see.

eryba1

October 21, 2013 – 4:12 pm

@jpsr1975: IT always feels that way. read cramers post I added a few min ago tom we start getting gov data that was not released during shudown.

ebdavids

ebdavids

October 21, 2013 – 5:05 pm

(and I’m Ed)

eryba1

October 21, 2013 – 5:07 pm

@jpsr1975: thats why as cody says its ALWAYS the hardest thing to do when the markets RAMPING its SO HARD to sell as U feel U can always make more by just letting it RIDE!! The opposite we all know is tru on the downside when stocks and the markets correct we think WOW will it ever stop falling, should I buy now? wait no it will go lower tomorrow let me wait. thats why we buy and sell in stages U will never catch the absolute bottom or top.

eryba1

October 21, 2013 – 5:08 pm

This is another reason why I like to look at fear greed index, RSI, mcclellan oscillator, VIX, TRIN, etc and read lots of other smart peoples sentiment to take it all in and guage for myself whats best for my accounts

spx opening to new all time highs. AAPL still ripping. stocks like FB NFLX and CMG which people thought were doomed are hitting new all time highs today. how high can we go? nobody knows!

eryba1

October 22, 2013 – 9:24 am

@musa: thats why we trim, feels like toughest thing to do, same as when our FAV stocks are pulling back and correcting. hardest thing to do then is buy

jjss

October 22, 2013 – 9:42 am

Cody, you said that you were both wrong and right… does that mean you are less bearish now?

Cody

October 22, 2013 – 9:47 am

Buying (and selling) in tranches rather than putting all your eggs in at one price is often a great risk-tolerance increaser for traders. That is, it helps you know that even if the first purchase goes into a loss early, you’re going to get a chance to add to it and lower your cost basis.

Cody

October 22, 2013 – 9:47 am

@jjss: No, I’m not less bearish about the near-term than I was, but the market’s the arbiter of right and wrong and it says I’m wrong so far.

eryba1

October 22, 2013 – 9:47 am

when the markets r up this much in short order SP 1650 2 weeks ago to 1750 today what is the investor / trader thought? trim? ride it out? next leg higher here we come? What are you guys thinking out there? anyone taking action buying, selling, sitting on hands

rkumar

October 22, 2013 – 9:50 am

sure feel like blow off top is coming??

Lu

October 22, 2013 – 9:50 am

@eryba1: seems pcln has a little more room to go to squeeze our puts further.

eryba1

October 22, 2013 – 9:52 am

@Lu: so U want a little more? Do U think u can catch a top? or get out before it turns south perhaps?

Lu

October 22, 2013 – 9:52 am

@cody, are any of your sources suggesting that JCP might go into bankruptcy?

eryba1

October 22, 2013 – 9:53 am

I know when I get a gift 40-50% like returns in common stocks in short order like FSLR 35-37 to 55-56 today in 2 weeks time then its wise to sell

Lu

October 22, 2013 – 9:54 am

@eryba1: I was hoping that it would be down today so that I could get out and then back in, but I’m gonna hold them and hope stock spikes soon then turns.

eryba1

October 22, 2013 – 9:54 am

@rkumar: blow off top? could be topping out this sort of strength does not go away that easily!!

Cody

October 22, 2013 – 9:54 am

@Lu: Yes, i think JCP will end up having to recapitalize at a near total loss for current equity holders.

eryba1

October 22, 2013 – 9:55 am

@Lu: have U been trimming to GUARANTEE u lock in some of those hopefully HEFTY gains vs trying to time things perfectly?

Cody

October 22, 2013 – 9:55 am

I think $JCP will end up having to recapitalize at a near total loss for current equity holders. It’s all about the balance sheet and cash flow and without some turn in the core business, I don’t see any other way out but an eventual bankruptcy or a BK-lite at least.

Lu

October 22, 2013 – 9:56 am

@cody: thanks so much for the info. I thought it had a chance with the holidays coming. Having crow for lunch.

Cody

October 22, 2013 – 9:56 am

Wise words from Elad: “I know when I get a gift 40-50% like returns in common stocks in short order like FSLR 35-37 to 55-56 today in 2 weeks time then its wise to sell”

Lu

October 22, 2013 – 9:57 am

calmdaw1

eryba1

October 22, 2013 – 9:59 am

@calmdaw1: yes on my screen elon musk TSLA founder company as well

eryba1

October 22, 2013 – 9:59 am

@Lu: Ok.

Lu

October 22, 2013 – 10:00 am

@cody: I’m guessing that JCP would wait to see how they fair the holidays before pulling the trigger on the restructuring. What’s your best guess scenario?

eryba1

October 22, 2013 – 10:00 am

is today the day GOLD and the GLD and GDX break above their 50 day moving avg ceilings?

Lu

October 22, 2013 – 10:02 am

does look like gld wants to go higher

eryba1

October 22, 2013 – 10:03 am

@Lu: YES! Lets watch the close and volume as well if good follow thru tom will be important as well if today it does advance

eryba1

October 22, 2013 – 10:05 am

I’ve added to my GLD common position today looking for a break above 50 day moving avg vs waiting for the break above

Lu

October 22, 2013 – 10:05 am

@eryba1: by the way, I was wrong about earnings. Most seem to be beating their estimates.

Lu

October 22, 2013 – 10:07 am

I am looking at buying gld jan calls.

eryba1

October 22, 2013 – 10:07 am

@Lu: good to be flexible and see the writing on the wall to change stance, u cant fight the trend for too long

Cody

October 22, 2013 – 10:07 am

@Lu: Oh yeah, I don’t think $JCP would go BK this year, but who the heck knows, it’s ugly there.

Lu

October 22, 2013 – 10:10 am

@cody: I accept they might restructure. I’m hoping for 10 or more so that I can get out. I think they might report better than they have the last few. Certainly can’t be worse.

Lu

October 22, 2013 – 10:12 am

@cody: I think that Johnson’s strategies needed time to show results. I was thinking this holiday might surprise to the plus side.

eryba1

October 22, 2013 – 10:46 am

888

October 22, 2013 – 10:54 am

Winston

October 22, 2013 – 10:55 am

I still have some appl jan 14 480 calls from a long time ago. Hate to trim them but prolly the thing to do.

eryba1

October 22, 2013 – 10:55 am

from a trader friend of mine on why the sudden downturn and implications: ” The indices are covering up some of the most chaotic action we have had in a while. After the gap up open the momentum related algorithms went to ‘sell’ which was probably triggered by the reversal in NFLX. For a while the bids totally disappeared in the high beta, big cap momo names. The conventional wisdom is that this sort of volatility occurs at turning points so stay on guard just in case.”

Market isn’t showing confidence in JNPR this morning before earnings. Cody, what to expect?

Cody

October 22, 2013 – 11:40 am

@jahmon: I expect good things in the earnings, but who knows how the market will react to that given today’s NFLX action.

NFLX nearly a 60 pt or just about 20% reversal from this morning pre market trading at 395. The CEO himself Reid Hastings said the stock current value was bubblicious!

Cody

October 22, 2013 – 1:32 pm

I’m buying some GSVC puts dated out into March or later of next year using a $12.50 and $15 strike price. More hedging is really what this trade is all about, but I do think this is another bubbled stock that will be in single digits again some day in another year or two if not much sooner.

NFLX 180. 395 to 323 now one day! lots of momentum names getting hit LNKD YELP FB vs the positive bias in the market averages. From a fellow trader: “Today I’m seeing a shift in the price action and that is causing me to react by selling positions and being more defensive. I suspect that the big swing this morning in many momentum names was driven by algorithms, but this sort of volatility is often a sign that conditions are starting to change. I want to make sure that I make the mental adjustment just in case this pressure increases.”

After $CREE’s most recent report, we stepped in and initiated a new position in the mid-$50s and have hardly gotten to buy another tranche since as the stock rallied 40% in a straight line. Looks like the momos who got back in hoping for a blowout quarter are selling out of the $CREE tonight. I’ll likely buy another tranche tomorrow or later this week after the dust settles post-earnings-report.

OMG APOL is always killing me. Its going up in after hours

Cody

October 22, 2013 – 4:20 pm

@satishask: $APOL been stuck down here around $20 +/-$2 for the last year. It’s a broken stock, IMHO, but it needs to break support to crack and/or it needs to cry uncle again on one these earnings reports finally. We got short a couple years ago in the mid $50s and haven’t covered it all yet.

Cody

October 22, 2013 – 4:30 pm

FYI, TWC subs, this was just on http://Scutify.com/scuttles.html ” All Star: RobertMarcinPosted … 3m ago $rmfd and $brcm not acting well to q4 outlooks it would appear. Fairchild ceo said 2 big smartphone makers are all unwinding inventory. perhaps I should lower my short term expectations on $tqnt. the BAW filter story is a multi YEAR play on the transition from 3g to 4g LTE. This quarter and next quarter is only the first inning on the opportunity for my “hat trick” investment. Note this all ye who own it.” @RobertMarcin Thank you, Marcin, that was something I’d cited in my original report about $TQNT — that inventories in the supply channel might be full enough already to keep the $AAPL iPhone upside from being fully recognized this quarter. Gulp.

Cody

October 22, 2013 – 4:31 pm

@rkumar: Yes, but I sure would have liked to have seen a big beat and boost in guidance instead of just “ok”. We’ll see how the markets arbitrates it manana.

eryba1

October 22, 2013 – 4:49 pm

nice move in the metals today on increased vol. SLV bounce on its 50 day avg to the upside and GLD and GDX closed rt at 50 day avg which is resistance on much higher volumes. Lets see if we get follow through tomorrow in the metals.
