October 25, 2013 – 12:59 pm
@eryba1: this market sure looks toppy, but im hedging against a pretty good year so far. thinking of call spreads on FB to eliminate some of the premiums
eryba1
October 25, 2013 – 1:00 pm
@jchuosu: toppy- yes MANY calling for that, but we can trade sideways too to eliminate that, although that prob wont help the VIX at a 13 low so lets be patient and not give back too much of the hard won gains this year so far.

What is the feeling on PCLN puts Cody recommended a couple weeks ago? Almost nothing but up since then. Even the down days start off down, then get recover some as the day progresses. Today is a case in point.

Someone trimming AMZN?
eryba1
October 25, 2013 – 2:37 pm
@jpsr1975: I mentioned here many times I started buy more and more after my subscribe and save program initiation with amazon after already being a prime member. That was the same time I wrote the article that was sent out to all TWC subscribers. The stock was at 250 at the time. at 333 and a 35% gain I had to trim some to protect that gain. Now I know ist safer to buy on any pullback and if market corrects it will pullback.
eryba1
October 25, 2013 – 2:42 pm
@jpsr1975: its wiser to look at my trim vs where the stock is when I buy again and I know it will most probably be higher than where I last sold, I look at the spread / difference as the insurance premium to know its safer to buy vs a bad report and see a 10+% decline of sorts we have seen in CREE TQNT as 2 examples of trying to wager on earnings

@eryba1: Hi there. Yesterday you mentioned FFIV. Are you long/short? What are your thoughts going into ER? I just read a very compelling case for shorting (actually, buying puts) on the stock awaiting management discussion on November 14 — from a guy who is very articulate, very smart, very right on short calls. (Hasn’t missed since i’ve been following him.) http://seekingalpha.com/article/1768182-f5-networks-multiple-contraction-storm-coming?ifp=0 Your thoughts? (Don’t rush; i knw it’s end of day .) Would loveyour response to the analysis (even though i know you don’t do options) if possible. Thanks.
eryba1
October 25, 2013 – 3:52 pm
@ebdavids: I mentioned FFIV in regards to the weaker action in CIEN who reports in dec yet was and is now down $3.5 or 15% in short order from its hi as JNPR EMC AKAM and FIO all reported weaker sales. I am not long or short ffiv
ebdavids
October 25, 2013 – 3:54 pm
Well, i encourage you to read the analysis just for your enjoyment (and reaction). I bought some puts based on it an hour and a half ago, and they’re up 40% . . . though of course i know that could just be a fluje. I’ll be patient.
ebdavids
October 25, 2013 – 3:54 pm
fluje = fluke!

October 25, 2013 – 3:55 pm

ebdavids

yes.
eryba1
October 25, 2013 – 4:26 pm
It was a wild week for some of our holdings, TQNT CREE & JNPR got HIT badly and CIEN fell about 13% in sympathy to JNPR and other networking stocks ( emc,fio & Akam weaker reports), while others had very positive reports and reactions ex AMZN, ZNGA & MSFT. Next week we get AAPL, FB, FSLR,LNKD, DDD. The market is still overbought, vix is stuck at 13, Bullish sentiment is still VERY hi and the greed index is still+60. If U havent trimmed its not too late. Gold closed above its 50 day moving avg and may be foreshadowing a new leg higher but well need a clear break on better volume to the upside. Asia was weak overnight and well see if that continues. Have a good weekend, rest up well be back here Monday morning with many heavy hitters reporting next week

October 25, 2013 – 4:32 pm
Plus the yield on the 10% is stuck at 2.5 which is troubling for now showing demand is so hi that yields dropped from 3% about a month ago to 2.5%. People are opting for small % yields in the Huge bond market (its size dwarfs the stock markets’) vs putting money to work in stocks at these levels. Lets watch all these points and see how it unfolds.

Does anyone have a feel for how FF is going to be affected by proposed EPA
SamsaricSufferer
October 26, 2013 – 12:56 am
Renewable Fuels Standard 2014 rule (RIN 2060-AR76). They are getting pushed hard by the refiners to lower the ethanol boondoggle volume requirement for 2014. FF derives 46% of revs from biomass (not ethanol) diesel http://tinyurl.com/kwjppal
SamsaricSufferer
October 26, 2013 – 12:59 am
Previous link was Reuters article. This link is from EPA: http://tinyurl.com/moj9j6y. I am wondering if FF will be a collateral casualty like CIEN has been in the network infrastructure sector hit. The EPa is supposed to have the rule issued by Oct. 30 but who knows how the shutdown may have altered that.
SamsaricSufferer
October 26, 2013 – 1:19 am
FF is trading funky as well. Set an new 52W high (19.09) on 10-21 but down 4 out of last 5 trading days including 10-21. Cody trimmed it on 10-21. I trimmed late last month but still holding a small position (4% of port). Was considering nibbling at FF until I dug a little deeper as to the whys of the last week’s trading. With flips and divvies I have whittled my average cost per share down to 10.48. Now, I am at a real buy-sell-hold inflection point. It isn’t profit until it’s booked. Any input would be appreciated.
eryba1
October 26, 2013 – 4:47 am
@SamsaricSufferer: If U have any CONCERN SELL! U can always buy back if it goes higher after the smoke is cleared of there is resolution then the diff from what U sold vs the new higher price is the safety premium and a sign U can get back in, If it falls well then move on. Once again we want to invest where our money finds a productive investment a stock on the rise or investing after some bottom is in. Not an investment where we fear potential news pending. There are SO many stocks out there to invest that have better looking and acting charts why stock or buy ones that are starting to downtrend or whose charts just look horrible. Earnings seasons is a great way to see what stocks that markets tell us are the next or chosen leaders with the reaction to earnings.

The Scutify app is now available for both Android and iPhone. Scutify is basically an expanded stock-market-centric twitter (here’s the Scutify $TWTR feed for example). It’s the best stock market app out there. Click here to download the Scutify Android app or click here for the Scutify iPhone app.

@msamuels2000: I use the Scutify iPhone app on my iPad and it works great. We’ll have a new iOS7 Apple app for Scutify out probably late next week. iPad app is probably another month or so after that, I would guess. Learnings a LOT about Apple vs. Google in the app wars since we bought Scutify.

After a few days away from the market this tight range today doesn’t seem strange, but given how strong some of the recent intraday actions have been, it does seem strange if you’ve been as on top of the markets as you have been. Finally, maybe we need another batch of earnings either good or bad to drive the next major market move, as $AMZN and $MSFT did on Friday for example.
eryba1
October 28, 2013 – 10:45 am
Bulls are at 59%, the highest since Apple was at 700 on its way to sub-400 (and the S&P actually corrected nearly 10%). Bears at 18%, the lowest since the August highs. http://tickersense.typepad.com/ticker_sense/

Hey mate. Hope you had a good time off. Android app is live as I told you previously, but I had to update it a few times to fix some critical bugs that were spotted by friends who did testing for me. So the current version up there is pretty good now. I posted out to all off the Social Media accounts for Scutify. Hopefully with your blast and continue blogging etc throughout the week, we can push on towards 10,000 reg’d users. 6570 at this stage. iOS should hopefully be done sometimes this week and then I will get my hands on it to again clean it up and finish it off. At this stage, probably won’t be live until sometimes next week since the App Store takes around 2-3 days to push it live. The Play Store is so much easier and quicker to deal with. I seriously think Google will overtake Apple one day (they make things quite simple for users). Cheers

@Cody: right now TWTR has no rick media interface FB does- These points and other discussed in the article written for TWC when FB was $25 a few months back. @Cody: cody whats your take on the markets? We had 2-3 days of very heavy declines only to recoup those losses in many names this month. Markets even on declining breadth & volume and still trending up overbought nature or not.
eryba1
October 28, 2013 – 12:52 pm
@doug.sekula: FB under 50 is a very tempting buy. Expectations like this morning stock upgrade are signs of more and more desired by the street. We need to see how a stock that has seen 100% upside in a few shrt months reacts to its earnings like FB and then TSLA

eryba1
October 28, 2013 – 1:09 pm
@MikeM: wait for codys action but wise to wait for decline / cracks in a particular stock or index, to anticipate and bet that way in any sizable way is to risk capital vs putting it to work for u in rising stock and charts. IMHO

@eryba1: Thanks for your thoughts on bank shorts. I am curious, though, as you mention your philosophy of waiting for the decline / crack in a stock I don’t see you execute that way all the time…for example, your recent QQQ short comes to mind. What was different for you with that one and some others?
eryba1

@MikeM: GREAT question!!!

October 28, 2013 – 1:36 pm
I have been pondering my HEDGE all weekend. I AM down just less than 1%. I did as U say anticipate a decline as the QQQ ran from 76 to 83.5 in almost a straight line!

@Bill, @Cody, @Eryba1, @Anyone: I recall a while back, Cody did a whole item on — if one wanted to invest a bit in bitcoin, as he ultimately did — where the safest/most reliable place was to do it. I’ve done a search on the TWC site, but haven’t found it. Can anyone direct me (or have a suggestion)? Thanks.

So I started to hedge against my new year hi in my accounts by trimming on up days, adding positions in GLD at 128 and under and the trims got me further in cash. I read so much oberbought overbought stats, internal market data, fear green index, + this on the sentiment #’s today to confirm my idea but the market could CARE LESS itss till riisng on weak breadth and weak volume all bad signs but at this juncture the market as a whole cares very little about this stuff: Bulls are at 59%, the highest since Apple was at 700 on its way to sub-400 (and the S&P actually corrected nearly 10%). Bears at 18%, the lowest since the August highs. http://tickersense.typepad.com/ticker_sense/

eryba1
October 28, 2013 – 1:47 pm
@MikeM: so as U can see my hedge is juts that a small loss rt now. The wise thinking says if you could always lose on your hedges you will be a wealthy man. The market by all accounts is overbought but it can go sideways to relieve that condition. if we go sideways the bull bear % will decline and become more neutral which for now seems top be the likely scenario unless we get bad reactions for the coming reports fro FB AAPL LNKD FSLR DDD etc
eryba1
October 28, 2013 – 1:48 pm
Im watching the hedge closely. We have fed speak this week as well if Im not mistaken so lots of cross currents and data to absorb by the street.
eryba1
October 28, 2013 – 2:02 pm
@MikeM: From an ASTUTE investor I follow: There’s a vicious rotation out of speculative and momentum stocks that have led the market for months into cyclical and defensive names that have lagged, such as Alcoa (AA) and Procter & Gamble (PG).Sometimes rotation can be a good thing, especially if the market starts to broaden and new groups play catch-up. But that doesn’t seem to be the case with this action as market players seem to be seeking safety as concerns grow over valuation of some of the strongest names. The oddest thing about this action is that the S&P 500 is hitting new highs while the underlying action is very cautious and defensive. Usually, the move to more defensive holdings comes after a period of weakness rather than at the peak of momentum
eryba1
October 28, 2013 – 2:02 pm
So far this year, the market has a very good record of finding its footing after a stumble. In fact, it is often said that there is no memory from day-to-day, but this weakness in leading stocks is a troubling change in character and if there isn’t some support soon, it is going to affect the indices as well. I’m staying out of the way and not betting on a comeback from the momentum names right now. This is not healthy action, despite what the indices may be doing.

@eryba1: Which stock were you referring to here?: “October 28, 2013 – 1:22 pm @ebdavids: less on here- Sell some into earnings- DONt bet and open sizable position on earnings date too risk- no matter what possible reward is the sinking losing money feeling is 10 X more powerful and painful than the joy and feeling of a stock moving higher!”
eryba1
October 28, 2013 – 3:20 pm
@jjss: investing in general was the topic not stock specific.
eryba1
October 28, 2013 – 3:22 pm
@jjss: TQNT was bad result, cree the same, AMZN was good, goog was down trending from 925 to 850 when it reported so it surprised to upside. TQNT was rising into earnings as was CREE. FB has now been pulling back from 54.5 to 50.33 fslr also reporting that has been RAMPING 37 to 55-56, aapl has been doing well as well 450 to 535 so bigger expectations for better performing stocks into earnings
jjss

eryba1
October 28, 2013 – 3:39 pm
@jjss: No I am saying its VERY dangerous, especially when a stock RUNS higher into earnings like FSLR has been doing, CREE, TQNT they ran MUCH higher into earnings so a lOT of good news was being priced in.

JPM Research AAPL: Apple Inc. : Sep-Q Wrap: Upward Mobility in Consensus Estimates Gets a Boost; Lifting PT to $600. We recommend investors take advantage of any near-term weakness in shares of Overweight-rated Apple. Results and outlook were better than expected. The gross margin outlook could be a source of debate for some investors who had sought more upside due to higher mix of iPhone. Apple’s gross margin outlook adjusts for increasing level of deferred revenue, Fx, and higher cost structures on new products in iPhone, iPad, and Mac line ups. In our view, most of these headwinds stand to be temporary, and therefore, should not overshadow the increasing momentum in Apple’s top-line at a time when other companies are hitting rough patches. For Apple, our Dec 2014 price target increases to $600, up from $545. https://jpmm.com/research/content/GPS-1242673-0

Bearish. But, while we all like to think of ourselves as independent thinkers, MSamuels has it right (and I mentioned this last week), we’re probably influenced by TWC (and Cody’s mantra), so I’m not sure this is an “unbiased” poll, Cody. You reap what you sow!

I dont think bearish is the right terminology here. I think cautious as S&P has been up 14 of 16 days here and stocks flew, however we have corrected quite a bit in individual names FB 54.5 to 49.2, cien 27.6 to 23, tqnt 20% CREE 16% JNPR near 10% fslr 6-8%. For that to have trimmed last few weeks was very wise and profitable as now we can pick and choose what we want back

@eryba1, do you have any thoughts about how the Fed’s decision or minutes from their meetings will impact GDX?

@eryba1, do you suspect that there’s an effort to keep things status quo in order to limit any harsh reactions in the marketplace

Should we buy more CIEN? Very tempting.
eryba1
October 30, 2013 – 11:59 am
@TL15: not at this point, budget talks got kicked down the road for not, not too far but a bit for now. market could use a breather as under the surface individual stocks have been correcting yet not evident in the markets at all aside from the small caps russell 2000
eryba1
October 30, 2013 – 12:01 pm
@doug.sekula: I am nibbling but leaving room as no support yet and nearing 17% correction so far like CREE and TQNT as if CIEN had warned as well.

October 30, 2013 – 12:02 pm
@eryba1, the market is in definite need of a correction, but my fear is that the general population thinks as long as the Fed says whatever they already believe (that QE will continue) then everything’s okay and it’s not getting any worse and then the markets will continue to rise
eryba1
October 30, 2013 – 12:16 pm
@TL15: I cant predict what will cause the markets to pullback from greed levels and too hi a % of bulls. We are going higher on lower volume and lower breadth all bad signs. SO lets see what happens. All we can do is control what we do in our individual names we own. SO on that point to have trimmed many names as of last week was VERY smart and now we have $$ to put back to work in those names at 10-20% discounts. Not a bad decision there.

@TL15: FB is a prime example, I was selling quite a bit last week it was my biggest position at 54+ and since stating I was selling then and looked to be prudent thing to do with a 100% rise in stock price in just about 3 months its now at or under 49 a 10% correction. One could easily start buying small positions in it to rebuild or wait for some leveling off first. Vs the markets endless rise we cant control the avg’s just our individual positions

@eryba1: I think we have all seen the same or similar news being used to justify a rise in the market on one day and a decline on some other day. These technical indicators are often good predictors and good reason for caution. One can’t spend too much time trying to predict the event that is going to precipitate a pullback; the “market” will find the “justification” after the fact, even though it may be news that was used to justify a bullish stampede under different circumstances. (too cynical?)
eryba1
October 30, 2013 – 12:43 pm
@Olivepetunia: well said and stated!! the fear greed index and oscillator and bullish bearish % levels are just that stats. Market will do what it wants until it doesnt and then those stats matter.

eryba1
October 30, 2013 – 1:02 pm
@jahmon: U mean another 7-10% on top of its already 10% decline so far? SURE it could depending on earnings tonight. The stock is up 100% from just 3 months ago.

Good Mark Hulbert article on MarketWatch about short term overbought condition in the market. I like his commentary because it is based on back tested data. This data set focuses on NASDAQ stocks so very relevant to us. http://tinyurl.com/m8qvl7h
